Gifted and Talented Foundations Coursework

Project Overview

This project uses the ASSURE model to retool existing coursework. Transformational learning theory applies. This course was originally designed in Canvas, but is now available as course in Articulate Rise. For the purposes of this portfolio, only the first module is attached.

 Problem

The state of Texas requires teachers who teach gifted students to take a 30 hour foundation course about gifted education. The problem is that each district designs their own coursework and delivery of information is inconsistent across the state.

Solution

My proposal was to take the information required by the state and make it deliverable by the state on their LMS website. This would ensure a uniform coursework that would allow teachers across the state to reference, compare and become familiar with their own district’s policies and procedures regarding gifted learners while at the same time getting consistent and updated information on best practices from the state.

The Process

Design Document

This coursework was completed as part of a capstone project for one of my master’s level courses. It began with a proposal and then a design document. The design document outlined the coursework’s goal and objectives as well as the research that went into coursework requirements and information.

Outline

Since this coursework comprises 30 hours, divided into five modules of six hours each, I began by conducting a needs analysis to identify the essential knowledge and skills required for effective gifted education. This analysis incorporated state of Texas requirements, trends in existing coursework, and input from educators in the field. Drawing on this data, along with my years of experience in gifted education, I developed a structured outline for each module. Specific assignments were then designed to align with the course goals and objectives, ensuring they meet both learner needs and state standards.

Job Aid

This coursework was initially developed in Canvas to be delivered and assessed by a team of trained facilitators. To ensure consistency and clarity in implementation, a comprehensive job aid was created to guide facilitators through the expectations of the course. The development of this job aid began with a close review of the course content, including module objectives, assignment rubrics, and discussion prompts. I then identified key decision points where facilitators would benefit from structured guidance—such as grading procedures, discussion facilitation strategies, and learner support protocols. The job aid was designed to be clear, concise, and user-friendly, using step-by-step instructions, checklists, and examples. It was also reviewed by several facilitators for usability and revised based on their feedback to better support their workflow and ensure alignment with course goals.

Development in Canvas/Articulate Rise and Storyline

I created this course in Canvas but due to the difficulty in accessibility for the purposes of this portfolio, I recreated it in Rise with some Storyline blocks included. The Canvas coursework allows for projects, discussions, and written assignments to be completed and submitted for a grade. The Articulate course has more interactive elements but is set up for course correction instead of a grade.
