Beer 101: Find Your Perfect Pour
Project Overview
This micro learning teaches inexperienced beer drinkers about beer styles, ABV and IBU, and which beer style is right for them.
This eLearning course was designed to educate novice beer drinkers about the fundamentals of beer. The course explores various beer styles, explains key concepts such as ABV (Alcohol by Volume) and IBU (International Bitterness Units), and helps learners determine which beers align with their personal tastes. Through quizzes and flavor-matching tools, learners gain the confidence to navigate beer menus and make informed choices.
Problem
I noticed when I visited craft breweries that the bartenders spent a lot of time explaining the different styles of beers to customers and this delayed their ability to quickly serve other customers.
Many new beer drinkers find the world of craft and commercial beers overwhelming. With a multitude of styles, cryptic terminology like “ABV” and “IBU,” and diverse flavor profiles, it’s easy for beginners to feel lost. This lack of knowledge can lead to frustration, poor buying decisions, and a general disinterest in exploring the wide world of beer.
Solution
This eLearning course breaks down beer complexity into digestible, learner-friendly content. It provides:
Clear explanations of major beer styles (lagers, ales, IPAs, stouts, etc.).
Visual guides and interactive elements to understand ABV and IBU ratings.
A flavor profile quiz to help users discover which beer suits their palate.
Practical tips on reading beer labels and ordering with confidence.
By the end of the course, users will have a solid foundation in beer knowledge and feel empowered to explore their personal preferences.
The Process
Outline and Storyboarding
This coursework was a personal project of mine from my own observations. I knew it was going to be a microlearning, so I created an outline for each slide and began to storyboard the look of each slide. The focus was on a fun and lighthearted learning experience that went over the basics without being too pedantic.
Development in Articulate Rise with Storyline Interactives
Rise was the perfect place to create this course but I did have one specific interaction in mind when I wanted to create it and that was the visual of the beer glass showing the various styles of beer. I created that slide in a Storyline block with the rest being in Rise.
